Workshop Overview

Pre-requisites:
Certificate in Personal Support Worker, Nursing Student 

A special 2-day workshop for Personal Support Worker which provides theoretical and supervised clinical instruction in the provision of basic foot care which restricts foot care to non-invasive measures. The workshop allows you to assist registered nursing staff in obtaining a holistic foot health assessment of the client and exhibit the basic knowledge in basic nursing foot care practice. Emphasis will be on identification and early recognition of foot problems requiring further assessment and referral to other regulated care providers.

About Workshop

This foot care course is designed to teach personal support workers (PSWs) working with the elderly, people with disabilities or those who are unable to provide proper routine foot care to themselves, how to assess and recognize foot related problems and communicate effectively with other members of the health team.
Objective of this workshop is to identifying potential problems involving the feet of your clients and also ensure that they receive appropriate care. Importance of making a referral and communication with your high-risk client is advised during the workshop. A review of anatomy and physiology as it pertains to foot care and conditions that can affect the feet are the primary focus. Hands-on experience regarding the use of foot care tools and learning experience about sterilization procedures of the equipment is given in this workshop.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Exhibit knowledge in basic nursing foot care practice.
• Integrate the knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the foot and lower leg in the early identification of foot problems.
• Demonstrate the ability to assist registered nursing staff in obtaining a holistic foot health assessment of the client.
• Provide basic foot care interventions within the scope of the PSW role and the policies and procedures of the agency or facility.
• Refer clients needing further assessment and interventions to registered Nursing Staff.
• Refer clients needing further assessment and interventions to registered Nursing Staff, Foot Physician, Specialist/Chiropodist, and other disciplines.
• Instruct clients regarding foot health maintenance.
